FAQS

What class should I start with?

If you are a 'C' Class Janitor, you must complete the 10-Week janitorial program. After completion, you will be eligible to register in the 2-year apprenticeship program. If you are a Helper-A Janitor/Maintenance Technician, you must complete the 2-Year Apprenticeship Program. It starts in January and July every year and goes one night each week for 2 years.

If you are an Assistant or Chief Engineer, you should check the schedule of Continuing Education classes and choose 8 hours each calendar year to attend. You should also consider some of the Certification classes that are offered and look into the Certified Residential Engineers' (CRE) Program.

If you are a Door Staff, you should sign up for the 7-Week Door Staff Training Program.

I’m not a Local 1 member right now, can I still take these classes?

Unfortunately, you are not eligible. You must be currently working at a residential building that has a contract agreement with SEIU Local 1, to be eligible to take these classes. If you would like help in your job search, you can submit a resume to trainingfund@seiu1.org.

How much do classes cost?

For Local 1 members under the residential contract, classes are either free or very inexpensive. We are a non-profit organization that is funded by contributions from your employer, so fees and charges are always minimal.
